Contacting Committees & Document Rooms
If you are interested in a particular legislative proposal and know the name of it but not the bill number, call 202.225.1772 or use http://congress.gov. Web searches can be unlimited. Individuals may request up to three bill numbers per telephone call.
If you know only the subject matter, call the general switchboard for all Congressional offices at 202.224.3121 and ask for the House and/or Senate bill numbers which deal with that subject. If the staff cannot find the bill numbers, they will direct you to the committee or subcommittee most likely to have that information.
If you contact a congressional committee or subcommittee for a particular piece of legislation and have an ongoing interest in that issue, ask that your name be placed on their mailing list so they can send you information on related items.
A copy of a particular bill can be picked up personally or requested in writing. There is no cost for this service. If a written request is made, reference the bill name and number, and include a self-addressed return mailing label. Send the request to either:
